[JACKIE DOOLEY] Male. 50s. An Irishman who’s settled in and made a life for himself in Broad Channel, Queens. He’s a boat owner, and often dons a weather beaten oilcloth coat. Widely known in the area, Dooley is acquainted with just about everyone – he makes it his business to meddle in their business, oftentimes acting as the under-the-radar intermediary; an Irish boss with a list of priors: loansharking, extortion, and fraud. When the MCS accuse him of being linked to a recent murder in Broad Channel, Jackie smugly admits to being an informant. After initial resistance to the MCS, he bends to a local Queens cop, Atwater, and agrees to wear a wire and talk to the mother of the murder suspect, his former love and secretary, Irene Boyle. [ATWATER] Male. 30s. Physically fit, a popular cop. He’s a rising star in Queens, and he’s determined to reach the top. After a Queens cop is found murdered in Broad Channel, he butts heads with the MCS who are reluctant to hand over the case to him. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio has joined USA Network’s “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” completing the casting transformation on the police procedural for its upcoming ninth season.
She will play the new captain taking over the Major Case Squad on the Wolf Films/Universal Cable Prods. series.
Mastrantonio’s character, who comes from a working-class background, succeeds Capt. Danny Ross (Eric Bogosian), who headed the division for the past three years, following the departure of Capt. James Deakins (original cast member Jamey Sheridan).
Mastrantonio is one of two new faces on “L&O: CI” for next season, joining Saffron Burrows. The hires follow the exit of four regulars on the show: original stars Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe as well as Bogosian and new mom Julianne Nicholson, who is being replaced by Burrows.
With the departure of D’Onofrio, the cop drama is taking on a lighter tone. It centers on Jeff Goldblum, whose character Zach Nichols becomes the squad’s top detective.
Mastrantonio is not a stranger to police procedurals; she has recurred on CBS’ “Without a Trace.”
Nicholson most recently starred in the CBS/Hallmark Hall of Fame movie “The Russell Girl.”

I told you a few weeks ago that “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” was letting go of three main players: Vincent D’Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, and Eric Bogosian. Now I can tell you this: one of their characters will die.
“CI” just finished filming an episode in which one of the three is murdered. That’s the exit show for the other two as well.
I am told by “CI” insiders that Erbe, especially, is very unhappy with the way things have worked out over there. “She was told everything was going fine, and then they were fired.”
Whoever was murdered isn’t too happy, either. But I’m not giving that part away.
The show is next turned over to Jeff Goldblum, who will soldier on without the original cast
[GLORIA JUSTIN] 50s-60s. Female. Dean of Arts at NYU. Questioned by members of the MCS, she fondly remembers a former charismatic arts student who had “a very unique world view.”
[DEPUTY COMMISSIONER TURNER] 50s. Male, African American. Distinguished and poised, the commissioner has called a member of the MCS into his office to deliver some big news.
[BIANCA TORELLI] 40s. Female. Along with the Deputy Commissioner, she has been sent from Internal Affairs to deliver some big news to a member of the MCS.
[TOM PILEGGI] 60s. Male. An attorney escorting his innocent client, who’s accused of being linked with piracy and arms trafficking, through a mob of reporters.
[REPORTER] 30s. Male/Female. Part of a large crowd of press clamoring to get answers from an accused criminal, this reporter gets a question in.

USA Network is finalizing a deal to bring Law & Order: CI back for a ninth season, but there’s a catch. Actually there are a few catches. Here’s what I’m hearing…
* Julianne Nicholson is out. The actress, who recently gave birth to her second child, has opted not to return. Saffron Burrows (My Own Worst Enemy) has emerged as the frontrunner to replace her.
* Burrows would be partnered with Jeff Goldblum, although his deal is also not 100 percent done.
* Where does that leave Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe? The CI vets are in talks to return in some capacity.
The show may still be airing its eighth season right now, but on DVD fans are just now getting a release date for Law & Order: Criminal Intent – The 4th Year (with episodes from the 2004-05 season). Early this past April we passed along to our readers that this title could be pre-ordered from Amazon, but this was prior to Universal Studio formally announcing the set. Today they made it official, though, schedule it to arrive on November 24th.
